Inspiration

A few years ago I started going to the gym, and a few months after that, I discovered a game called "Hotline Miami", and I fell in love with the pixel art design.

I thought that I might as well combine the 2, since both Hotline Miami and heavy lifting are "aggression oriented". (With a difference that one involves barbells instead of baseball bats.)

That idea eventually became RedPlate.

What it does

RedPlate is a strength-focused workout tracker built for people who love chasing PRs. (PR = Personal Record = usually 1 rep max = the heaviest weight you can lift)

It's a redesigned workout tracker (with this pixel art UI) having detailed analytics, and ranked progression. Making lifting more fun.

How we built it

The app was built in flutter with the help of AI. Some assets were designed in Asperite. The whole app was supplemented with my knowledge about powerlifting & strength training.

Challenges we ran into

Making consistent illustrations for exercises, and generally all other pixel art assets, as it was my first ever time designing in this style.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm generally proud of how the whole app came out. It feels like it has personality and it's own mini universe.

The visual style, animations, mascot, other assets - it all feel like parts of the same product.

What we learned

Pixel art isn't as easy to make as it looks. Gym app can be much more comprehensive that you can imagine.

What's next for RedPlate - Chase PRs

The next step is to keep expanding RedPlate around one core idea: making chasing strength and PRs more fun. And generally making it the go-to app for ranked strength training.
