Description

What We Built, the Problem It Solves, and Who It Helps Human–wildlife conflict is one of the most serious challenges faced by forest-fringe communities across India and many parts of the world. Villagers who live close to forests often face night-time intrusions from elephants, boars, and other wild animals. To protect their homes, farms, and livestock, they commonly rely on unsafe solutions such as burning tires, lighting real fire, bursting crackers, or using electrified fences. These methods frequently cause forest fires, injuries, property damage, and ecological imbalance. Both humans and animals become victims. To solve this long-standing problem, we built RedFlame Sentinel—a completely fireless, eco-safe, portable device designed to mimic the visual and auditory effects of real flame and alerting sounds, but without causing harm. The device uses LED + laser modules, a blower system, and silk cloth inside a reflective chamber to create a bright, moving flame effect that animals instinctively avoid. Additionally, a USB-controlled speaker plays safe deterrent sounds that increase effectiveness without stressing wildlife. Everything is powered by a 12V rechargeable battery, supported by a regulator and AC adapter for extended use. The internal architecture is engineered for maximum safety and realism. The laser provides sharp flame highlights, the LED produces warm glowing brightness, and the blower lifts the silk strips to create continuous flame-like motion. This combination creates the illusion of a real flame—visible from a distance—without using fire, smoke, or heat. The reflective metal chamber amplifies the effect, making the flame appear larger and more dynamic. A USB sound module and speaker emit gentle crackling or alert patterns that animals recognize but are not harmed by. All components are enclosed in a rugged, portable casing so villagers can carry it during night patrols, farming, or emergency situations. RedFlame Sentinel solves the core problem of safety. Instead of using hazardous tools or waiting for forest officials to arrive, villagers can activate the device instantly. It helps prevent crop loss, protects lives, reduces fear during night travel, and avoids environmental damage. It also eliminates the need for dangerous traditional deterrents that often trigger forest fires or injure animals. This device directly helps farmers, forest-edge families, night-shift workers, children walking to schools, forest watchers, and tribal communities. It can also support forest departments during patrolling operations and wildlife NGOs working on conflict reduction. Because it is portable and reusable, it becomes a long-term, affordable solution for communities that otherwise have no safe protection tools. In addition to the current model, RedFlame Sentinel has a clear upgrade path. We plan to integrate IoT sensors, AI-based species recognition, mobile alerts, and blockchain-based incident logging. This will transform the device into a complete Smart Wildlife Conflict Management System, enabling early warnings, real-time data sharing, and community-wide protection networks. RedFlame Sentinel is designed to protect people, farms, and ecosystems while keeping wildlife safe. It brings together engineering, safety, and sustainability in one simple, reliable device—supporting peaceful coexistence and advancing UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health, climate action, resilient communities, and life on land.

Inspiration

Human–wildlife conflict continues to threaten the lives, livelihoods, and crops of forest-fringe communities. Villagers are often forced to rely on dangerous methods such as fire, burning tires, crackers, and electric fences, which lead to accidents, forest fires, or animal injuries. We wanted to develop a fireless, smoke-free, and environmentally responsible device that offers instant protection without harming wildlife. This vision led us to create RedFlame Sentinel—a modern evolution of traditional fire-based deterrence, redesigned using safe light, sound, and airflow simulation.

What It Does

RedFlame Sentinel is a smart, portable eco-protection device that safely repels wild animals using: • Laser + LED flame simulation projected inside a reflective chamber • Moving silk cloth to create realistic flame motion without real fire • Blower system to produce rising flame-like airflow • USB-controlled sound module and speaker to play safe deterrent sounds • Rechargeable 12V battery with AC adapter support The combined effect of light, motion, reflection, and sound triggers natural avoidance behavior in animals—without causing harm, stress, or environmental damage.

How We Built It

The RedFlame Sentinel uses a carefully engineered internal system:

  1. Flame Simulation Chamber • A reflective cylinder enhances brightness and flame realism. • Silk cloth strips placed at the top mimic rising flames through airflow.
  2. Light System • Laser module for sharp flame edges • High-power LEDs to produce the core flame glow These create a bright, dynamic flame effect visible from a long distance.
  3. Blower System • A compact blower fan pushes air upward • This lifts and moves the silk cloth continuously, imitating flame motion
  4. Power Module • 12V rechargeable battery powers the entire device • Voltage regulator ensures safe power delivery • AC adapter supports charging and extended use
  5. Sound Module • USB sound device plays non-harmful deterrent audio • Speaker produces crackle-like or alert sounds (wildlife-safe levels) This design achieves the effect of a bright, moving flame + alerting sound without using real fire, smoke, or explosives.

Challenges We Ran Into

• Making flame effects realistic without using fire • Calibrating LED and laser brightness for both visibility and safety • Designing airflow strong enough to move cloth realistically • Keeping the system lightweight and portable • Ensuring that sound deterrents remain safe for animals • Maintaining low power consumption for long field use

Accomplishments That We’re Proud Of

• Developed a completely fireless flame simulator for wildlife protection • Ensured zero environmental harm—no smoke, no fire, no explosives • Community-friendly design usable by children, elders, and farmers • Supports forest conservation by reducing fire risks • Strong alignment with UN SDGs: o SDG 3 – Good Health & Well-Being o SDG 11 – Sustainable Communities o SDG 13 – Climate Action o SDG 15 – Life on Land

What We Learned

• How to combine optics (LED + laser), airflow, and acoustics to simulate natural deterrent effects • The importance of designing safe and ethical wildlife protection systems • How small engineering improvements can prevent forest fires and reduce conflict • That communities near forests need affordable, portable protective devices • Real innovation respects both people and wildlife

What’s Next for RedFlame Sentinel

We plan to transform the device into a smart automated protection system:

  1. IoT & AI Integration • Motion sensors to detect animals automatically • AI-based species recognition (wild boar, elephant, etc.) • Automatic activation of light + sound deterrents
  2. Mobile App Dashboard • Alerts sent directly to villagers’ phones • Battery status, device activity, and environmental data
  3. Blockchain-Based Incident Logging • Every wildlife encounter stored securely • Useful for forest officials, NGOs, and compensation programs
  4. Community-Wide Safety Network • Multiple devices linked together • Real-time shared alerts across villages • Heat maps of wildlife movement for early warnings Our ultimate goal is to establish safe coexistence between humans and wildlife, without harming nature or depending on dangerous traditional methods.
