Inspiration
The genesis of the ASL Interpreter project emerged from a pivotal college experience where I encountered the challenges faced by a deaf classmate. Witnessing the struggle of ASL interpreters to keep pace with technical lectures sparked a deep-seated commitment to enhancing accessibility and inclusivity through XR technology.
What it does
In educational settings, where deaf individuals face communication challenges, the real-time American Sign Language interpretation system empowers users by translating ASL gestures into text.
How I built it
The project leverages PICO VR technology, integrating Sense and Interaction Packs. Video See-Through and Spatial Anchors enhance real-time hand gesture recognition, while Space Calibration ensures precise alignment in the user's physical space. The Interaction Pack's Input Mapping links ASL gestures to English letters and numbers, creating a comprehensive translation system.
Challenges I ran into
Navigating the complexities of ASL translation posed inherent challenges. Designing an intuitive user experience, ensuring real-time feedback, and addressing diverse signing styles demanded a nuanced approach. Technical intricacies, from spatial calibration to haptic feedback, added layers of complexity.
Accomplishments
The color-coded finger approach and number recognition enhance accuracy, laying the groundwork for potential future developments.
What's next for Redefining XR: American Sign Language Interpreter
The project addresses immediate communication needs and hints at the possibility of bidirectional translation, redefining the landscape of accessible communication.
