Inspiration
We were inspired to do something about the way that deaf people were treated after seeing them being unfairly perceived when they were working. From this, we also found out more about the inequalities that deaf people face when finding employment or during employment.
What it does
It provides a way of communication between the customer and the deaf employee, using a button and a device that buzzes them to notify. The application that we have designed also comes provides the hard of hearing the ability to apply for more jobs by providing a platform to more easily reach out to platforms to apply.
How we built it
We built the buzzer using the ESP32 module and the LCD screen, therefore it is able to show where the customer requires help, streamlining the communication process. For the application, we first did the outline of the application and the UI in figma, then we coded the rest in reactnative.
Challenges we ran into
The ESP32 module was not working at the start, and we had difficulty troubleshooting the part since it could not run the most basic of code, which was to blink.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
That we have a shining prototype and that we have a working application.
What we learned
We learnt that deaf people do face harsh stigmas when it comes to finding jobs, although they are still capable of doing the job properly with their other senses.
What's next for ReDeafine
From here, we plan to make the product much cheaper and easily produced so that , while having a long battery life so that the employee need not worry about needing to change the batteries/recharge it.
