RedditPulse AI
Turning Reddit's Noise Into Research Signal
1. Project Name
RedditPulse AI
RedditPulse AI is an AI-powered discussion intelligence platform that transforms long, unstructured Reddit discussions into transparent, structured research reports.
2. Challenge Category
Primary Category: Artificial Intelligence
Interdisciplinary Approach: Software & Technology, Business & Finance, and Human-Centered Research
RedditPulse AI combines natural language processing, large language models, behavioral research, and product design to make online community discussions easier to understand without stripping away the original voices behind them.
3. The Problem
Reddit contains an enormous amount of first-hand knowledge, experience, advice, and disagreement. People routinely use it to make decisions: which product to buy, whether a service is worth paying for, how others experienced a situation, or what risks they should know about.
The problem is that Reddit is designed for conversation, not synthesis.
A user researching a topic may encounter hundreds or thousands of comments spread across nested threads. The most visible responses are usually those with the highest vote counts, but popularity does not necessarily represent truth, consensus, or even the broader opinion of the community. Early comments can accumulate votes and visibility, creating a feedback loop where what is seen as popular becomes even more popular.
This creates three major problems:
- Information overload: Valuable insights are buried inside long discussions.
- Popularity bias: Highly upvoted comments can appear representative even when they are not.
- Lack of synthesis: Users must manually identify recurring themes, disagreements, advice, risks, and emotional patterns.
This affects anyone using Reddit as a research tool from consumers comparing products to people researching careers, services, experiences, or important decisions.
We saw an opportunity to solve a simple but meaningful problem:
How can we make Reddit's collective intelligence easier to understand without replacing or distorting the original discussion?
4. The Solution
RedditPulse AI turns a Reddit discussion into a navigable, evidence-oriented research report.
Instead of simply summarizing the top comments, RedditPulse analyzes the discussion as a whole and organizes the information into several complementary layers:
AI Discussion Summary
A structured overview captures the major points of the conversation without relying on a single highly upvoted comment.
Community Consensus Meter
RedditPulse separates consensus from sentiment. It estimates how strongly participants agree with particular positions rather than treating positive sentiment or vote count as a proxy for agreement.
Sentiment & Emotional Tone
The platform analyzes overall polarity as well as confidence, sentiment progression, and dominant emotions such as frustration, anxiety, enthusiasm, and relief.
Semantic Theme Clustering
Comments are grouped into meaningful topics for example, price, durability, usability, performance, or customer service making it easier to understand what the community is actually discussing.
Recurring Advice & Risk Extraction
Repeated recommendations, warnings, and experiences are identified and de-duplicated. Recurring patterns become easier to distinguish from isolated anecdotes.
Contradiction View
Opposing perspectives are presented side by side, helping users understand where the community disagrees instead of forcing the discussion into a single conclusion.
Full Discussion
The original discussion remains accessible alongside the analysis.
This is a deliberate design decision: RedditPulse does not ask users to blindly trust the AI. It makes the AI's conclusions easier to verify against the source material.
The information architecture follows the way a researcher naturally investigates a topic:
Summary → Consensus → Sentiment → Themes → Advice → Risks → Questions → Full Discussion
The result is not "what should you think?" It is:
"Here is what people are saying, what they tend to agree on, where they disagree, and why."
What makes RedditPulse different?
Most approaches to Reddit summarization focus primarily on generating a shorter version of a thread. RedditPulse focuses on discussion intelligence rather than compression.
Our core design principle is that:
Popularity ≠ consensus ≠ truth.
Instead of simply following Reddit's existing ranking system, RedditPulse combines sentiment analysis, semantic clustering, recurring-pattern detection, contextual LLM reasoning, and structured presentation to provide a more complete picture of the discussion.
At the same time, we preserve access to the original content so that users can inspect the evidence themselves.
5. Development & Process
We are a team of two, and the project began with a research question rather than a purely technical idea.
We first conducted user interviews, secondary research, and a psychological literature review around online communities, herding, echo chambers, and social influence. This helped us investigate whether the problem was actually meaningful before designing the product around it.
One particularly relevant finding came from research by Muchnik, Aral, and Taylor, whose 2013 Science study demonstrated that social influence can affect voting behavior online. Their work reinforced our concern that platform-level popularity signals should not automatically be treated as an objective measure of community agreement.
We then translated those insights into product requirements and built an end-to-end prototype.

Analysis Pipeline
Our analysis pipeline deliberately combines deterministic NLP with contextual LLM reasoning:
Raw Discussion → NLTK preprocessing → VADER sentiment baseline → Gemini 2.5 Flash → Structured Pydantic JSON → React interface
NLTK is used for text cleaning and tokenization.
VADER provides a fast, local, deterministic sentiment baseline. This gives us a lightweight first layer without requiring an LLM call for basic polarity analysis.
Gemini 2.5 Flash then receives the discussion and sentiment information and performs the more contextual reasoning required for consensus estimation, semantic themes, emotional nuance, recurring advice, risks, contradictions, and structured summaries.
The output is constrained to structured schemas validated through Pydantic, ensuring that the frontend receives predictable data rather than attempting to interpret arbitrary LLM-generated prose.
Key Development Challenges
Separating sentiment from consensus
One of our earliest mistakes was treating the average sentiment of a discussion as its consensus.
We realized that a thread can be overwhelmingly negative while participants strongly agree about why something is bad or have positive and negative opinions while still agreeing on a specific fact.
We therefore redesigned consensus as a separate analytical dimension.
Reliable structured AI output
Generating a natural-language summary is relatively straightforward. Producing reliable, consistently structured JSON across different discussion lengths, topics, and writing styles was much harder.
We iterated on prompts and schemas until Gemini's outputs could reliably conform to our Pydantic models.
Reducing bias without introducing another bias
Our goal was never to simply ignore Reddit's vote system. Votes still contain useful information, but they should not automatically be interpreted as objective consensus.
We designed RedditPulse around multiple signals rather than a single popularity metric.
Preserving transparency
We intentionally kept the original discussion accessible rather than hiding it behind an AI-generated report.
This became a core product principle:
AI should structure the evidence, not replace it.
Building a real product
We shipped a working end-to-end application rather than a static prototype, with a React frontend communicating with a FastAPI backend deployed separately.
We also addressed practical engineering issues including CORS configuration, environment secrets, repository separation, Docker deployment, and TypeScript's verbatimModuleSyntax requirements.
Economic Viability
We also considered whether the architecture could support a sustainable product.
By running VADER locally and reserving LLM usage for higher-level reasoning, we keep inference costs low. Based on our current assumptions, an individual analysis costs approximately $0.007–$0.008 in LLM usage.
Our planned freemium model would offer limited free analyses and an unlimited paid tier at $4.99/month.
At a hypothetical target of 150,000 monthly active users and a 3% paid conversion rate, this would represent approximately 4,500 subscribers and roughly $270,000 in annual recurring revenue before other business costs.
These are projections rather than validated revenue figures. We have deliberately kept CAC, churn, API pricing changes, and actual user behavior outside the current model until we have real usage data.
What We Have Built
We have a functioning product with:
- AI-generated discussion summaries
- Consensus analysis
- Sentiment and emotional analysis
- Semantic theme clustering
- Recurring advice detection
- Risk extraction
- Contradiction analysis
- Structured AI output
- Access to the original discussion
- A deployed frontend and backend
Future Development
Our next steps include:
- Automatic Reddit API thread import
- Conversational
/chatanalysis of individual discussions - Multi-thread and cross-subreddit comparison
- Historical trend analysis
- Emotion radar visualizations
- Source credibility and community trust signals
- User accounts and analysis history
- PDF research reports
- Real-world validation of metrics such as time-to-insight, decision confidence, summary accuracy, and consensus accuracy
Our long-term goal is to make Reddit's collective intelligence legible without making it less honest.
RedditPulse AI does not aim to replace the community or tell users what to believe. It gives them a structured way to understand the conversation and keeps the original conversation close enough to challenge the AI when necessary.
