Inspiration
We wanted to create a fun way for Redditors to collaborate on storytelling — one line at a time. Inspired by RPGs, improv writing, and collective creativity, we built a tool where the community drives the plot forward.
What it does
The app lets users:
- Submit a short line (≤300 chars).
- Vote on their favorite submissions.
- The top lines become the next chapter.
- A leaderboard tracks the best authors.
Every round produces a new piece of the story, and the community builds a collective RPG together.
How we built it
- Frontend: React + Vite + Tailwind for UI.
- Backend: Devvit platform with Node/TypeScript.
- Storage: Redis for rounds, votes, and story history.
- Reddit API: Used to fetch usernames, avatars, and manage moderators.
- Deployment: Devvit CLI (
npx devvit upload+npx devvit install).
Challenges we ran into
- Preventing UI flicker during optimistic updates.
- Handling moderation (deleting troll submissions, early round close).
- Keeping state in sync across Redis and client polling.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- A working collective story RPG that runs entirely inside Reddit.
- Clean UI with live submissions, voting, and a growing story archive.
- Leaderboard + avatars for a more engaging community experience.
What we learned
- How to build with Devvit and Reddit’s APIs.
- Balancing optimistic UI updates with server polling.
- Designing for collaborative creativity on Reddit.
What's next
- Open this up in a public subreddit (so anyone can play).
- Add more genres (fantasy, sci-fi, mystery).
- Expand moderation tools and rate limits.
- Enhance the story archive with search and highlights.
