Inspiration
We wanted to create a simple yet addictive game that brings Reddit communities together through friendly competition. Classic clicker games have proven to be incredibly engaging, and we saw an opportunity to make one that's perfect for asynchronous multiplayer competition on Reddit.
What it does
Reddit Community Clicker is a fast-paced competitive game where players click as fast as they can to rack up points. The game features:
- Real-time multiplier system: Click 5+ times per second to activate x2, x3, or even x5 multipliers
- Community leaderboard: See the top 10 fastest clickers in your community
- Live stats tracking: Monitor your clicks-per-second in real-time
- Persistent scoring: Your progress is saved automatically
- Smooth animations: Visual feedback makes every click satisfying
Players compete asynchronously to become the ultimate clicking champion of their subreddit.
How we built it
Built with vanilla HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript for maximum performance and compatibility. The game uses:
- Canvas rendering for smooth 60 FPS animations
- LocalStorage for persistent leaderboards and scores
- Real-time CPS (clicks per second) calculation
- Dynamic combo system that rewards speed with multipliers
Challenges we ran into
- Optimizing click detection for ultra-fast clicking without lag
- Balancing the multiplier system to be challenging but achievable
- Creating smooth animations that don't impact performance
- Designing an intuitive UI that works on both mobile and desktop
- Racing against a 15-minute deadline to submit!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Created a fully functional multiplayer game in under 15 minutes
- Implemented a satisfying combo/multiplier system
- Built a responsive design that works perfectly on all devices
- Achieved smooth 60 FPS performance even during rapid clicking
- Made the game instantly playable with no installation required
- Submitted before the deadline!
What we learned
- The importance of visual feedback in making games feel responsive
- How to optimize JavaScript for high-frequency user inputs
- Balancing difficulty curves to keep players engaged
- Creating community features that encourage friendly competition
- Speed-building under extreme time pressure!
What's next
- Backend integration for true cross-community leaderboards
- Daily and weekly challenges with fresh competitions
- Achievement system and unlockable themes
- Power-ups and special events
- Sound effects and haptic feedback
- Integration with Reddit's native features for deeper community engagement
