Inspiration
I was inspired by retro tech. Growing up, I had a Tamagotchi, and I enjoy creating a bridge between nostalgic and modsern "tech" experiences, which is a similar vibe to my other projects. A simple virtual pet is also perfect for user engagement. I also spent way too much time on Neopets back in the day 🙈.
What it does
You can feed, clean, and play with your pet and see how it reacts in real time. The goal is to create a fun, game that feels both nostalgic and interactive within Reddit itself.
How we built it
I built the app in VS Code with help from ChatGPT, iterating quickly on UI and functionality to bring the concept to life.
Challenges we ran into
I actually had to make four different apps before I finally got one running. The main blocker was figuring out how to create an interactive post on Reddit it felt like such a simple thing, yet kept tripping me up.
I also hit dependency mismatches and Node version conflicts along the way.
More details of the debugging struggles are written up here: Project Blog.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
That I stuck with it despite the time constraints, balancing other personal projects, and life in general and saw it to the end, even though I don't feel it is polished yet but getting something playable at all was a win.
What we learned
Always allocate more time than expected to account for the unexpected problems you’re bound to encounter in development.
What's next for Reddi
I really want it to look more polished, spend more time on it. In the future my vision is for it to have more community engagement features - mood based on upvotes, comments etc - emoji based mood so it will appear as a "mood ring" for the community. I think this could be a fun subtly way to encourage positivity on reddit communities.
