Inspiration

I do work as a peer mentor for students with learning disabilities. One of the things I often do is set up reminders for their schedules so they know when to go to class. This often takes a long time as students have different classes/phones/comprehension. I came up with this idea because it would make it incredibly easy to do.

What it does

People can upload a screenshot of their Marist schedule and their email to sign up for reminders. Our project uses text recognition to analyze the schedule, sort it into separate classes, and give the student reminders when they should go to a class.

How we built it

We built this project as a nodejs backend, vanilla frontend, using tesseract as an image recognition. It is set up to use Amazon's SES SMTP service to send the emails.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge we into was sending the email. Unfortunately we were not able to get an SMTP server up in time as many of the tools we were trying to use required 24h+ for verification.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Being able to create a pipeline of downloading

What we learned

How to get user-submitted files downloaded and read to the server. How to use text recognition technology to scan in and parse for content. JavaScript for webforms.

What's next for Red Fox Reminder

We will try to show it to the office of accommodations to see if they would be interested in using it
