Inspiration
We are four aspiring female scientists studying abroad in London and are striving to address one of the environmental challenges we have come across since we moved to the United Kingdom. Recycling is not only a good habit to adopt but an essential turning point for the future of our planet. However, from country to country, the triage procedures and lists of recycled items are different, making it impossible to confidently sort our trash and often demotivates us to recycle at all.
What it does
RecyGlobal will help you:
- dispose of an item in the appropriate way according to your location
- find a creative idea to reuse it
- search for nearest collection locations / times
- sign up for our mailing list to discover more sustainable habits to adopt!
How we built it
We used HTML and CSS to build a website where you can input an item you want to dispose of and find how to recycle it, according to your country. You can find the nearest collection point or look up when the item could be collected from your house and how to prepare it.
Alternatively, you can find creative ideas on how to reuse in your house and sign up for our mailing list to discover new ways to live sustainably.
Challenges we ran into
Scaling up our idea for all the countries in Europe; gathering information about country-specific recycling regulations and all the existing centers for recycling.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Striving towards borderless recycling, building a community of informed individuals that contribute to the foundation of a sustainable future of the globalized world, bringing together local recycling guidelines, and making them easily accessible for everyone.
What we learned
As biology, biochemistry, and bioengineering students, we have learned front-end basics starting with almost zero knowledge and ended up with a website prototype we are very proud of. We have learned to use to plan a project from scratch, use Git and Github to work collectively, and front-end technologies: HTML and CSS.
What's next for RecyGlobal
What’s next for RecyGlobal: In the future, we are planning to transform our idea into a mobile app that is easily accessible and user-friendly. We are also planning to create a link to each user’s personal calendar so that they can be reminded in time about the collection times. We are also aiming to extend globally and employ image recognition algorithms for photo-based searches!
