Inspiration
We were inspired to create Recycling Simulator because we noticed a lack of knowledge and patience when it comes to recycling at schools and public places. Many people are in a rush, and even if there are signs to indicate what goes where, many people don't take the time to read them. Recycling Simulator is meant to be a way to show people a way to recycle swiftly and accurately.
What it does
It spawns you in a new world and activates a timer, giving you a specified amount of time to find trash scattered across the map and put them in the correct bin out of four: recycling, garbage, glass, and compost. Getting an item right grants you points while getting it wrong takes away lives. If your life reaches 0, your points are reset to 0 again, but you can continue gathering trash if the time hasn't ended.
How we built it
We built this game using Roblox Studio and the programming language Luau, combining it with many custom 3d items our member Angel made in Blender.
Challenges we ran into
None of us had ever coded in Roblox Studio, so we had to watch many tutorials to get the hang of it.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud that our game incorporates all of the mechanics we planned and that it works in a satisfactory way. In just two days, and with no experience, we were able to make a fun game we enjoy playing and exhibits the hackathon's theme.
What we learned
We learned many mechanics of Roblox Studio, from how to landscape, to how to add a working timer.
What's next for Recycling Simulator
Going forward, we want to add new and more complicated levels that keep the game fun and new for the players and experiments with new mechanics, such as collecting underwater trash.
