Team name : TEAM MRSJ

Name of project : Recycling in J city

Solution : Our solution is a recycling game with two parts. The first is a bin to collect recyclables while the second is a sorting game that teaches players which items to sort into which bins. These games were coded up with Scratch and can be controlled by a Microbit. To start a new game, players shake the microbit for a new scream. To move the bin (game 1) or the rubbish (game 2), players press the buttons A and B to move left and right respectively. To win the first game, players have to hit 10 points. On the other hand, if they go into the negatives, they lose the game. Meanwhile in the second game, they have to try surviving with 3 lives. Whenever a player loses, the microbit will display the words : game over and the screen will similarly switch to such a display.

How it will achieve the UN SDGs : We targeted SDGs 12 and 13. This game encourages people to recycle, which works towards the goal of responsible consumption and production, especially in a city like Singapore in which we have limited landscape for our trash, being able to recycle and repurpose different materials is especially crucial. We find that most people do not recycle because they do not have a practice of doing so or do not have external motivation and encouragement to do so. Hence, this game will encourage them to recycle more and also to teach them recycling, which items to put in which bins, which is another aspect of recycling that often meets problems since the sorting process is often complicated by people anyhow throwing items into the wrong bins.
