Inspiration

I was inspired by the environmental messaging that I receive every time I shop for items or buy products. I always see "this bottle is recyclable" or "this is a reusable bag" and wondered what it actually meant for the environment. I started to think about what should/shouldn't be placed in the recycling bin, so I built this project to inform everyone, not just me, what items are recyclable.

What it does

Many items that could have been recycled are thrown in the trash, mainly due to a lack of awareness/understanding about what is/what isn't recyclable.

My solution is to create a fun game that helps inform people what should be recycled and what shouldn't, making it easier for the recycling companies to process/reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

How we built it

This was built with HTML, CSS, and JS.

Challenges we ran into

Learning how to control the canvas element with JS took time, especially considering the time constraints of the hackathon.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Building/deploying a website with a functional game in less than 48 hours. Learning how to use JS and the canvas element to create a fun game.

What we learned

Recycling is more complicated than I previously thought. There are multiple types of plastics that may/may not be recyclable and a whole list of products that shouldn't be recycled.

What's next for Recycling Game

I could try to expand this as a PSA for municipal recycling companies to inform people about what should and shouldn't be placed in the recycling bins. This could make the sorting/processing work at the recycling plant much easier.
