Inspiration
When we were eating outside of Tepper, we found ourselves unable to quickly find a bin within our sight. It would be great, sustainability-wise, for us to have an application that, like the food site at CMU, can quickly guide users to the closest bin locations.
What it does
When the user open up our site, paul-ma, they can quickly be able to locate the nearby bin location and the bin type (recycling, or litter, or others) and guide them towards such locations. In this way, we no longer need to worry about holding a piece of garbage on hands for too long and unable to find a bin. Moreover, this app would be part of the great green evolution, where it supports sustainability in a way of reducing random waste disposing.
How we built it
We take advantage of google map's API as our foundation, and build up features such as supporting user uploading locations. We build this site on GitHub page, where through the link https://paulma.me everybody can easily have access to the service.
What we learned
All of our team members came with no prior web development experience, but through this project, we were able to build up a working site with multiple functionalities using HTML, JavaScript, integrating Google map API, and more.
What's next for Recycling Bin Locator
Integrating other APIs to provide more functionalities, advertisement for getting more users upload customized bin locations, gather more data point to scale the region of the app.
