Moving to a new country, I struggled with recycling rules—they were different and confusing. This inspired me to create Smart Bin, an app that scans items or texts to identify the correct disposal bin. Through this project, I deepened my understanding of AI and machine learning, especially in image recognition and natural language processing. I learned how to build and train a neural network to identify materials like plastic, paper, and metal accurately.
Developing Smart Bin also taught me the importance of user-centered design. I created a simple, intuitive interface after researching the challenges people face with waste management. One of the toughest challenges was ensuring the app worked reliably with diverse items and labels across various lighting conditions. Testing it with real-world data was a learning curve, but it improved my problem-solving skills.
The experience reinforced my belief that technology can simplify everyday tasks while promoting sustainability, and I’m excited to see how Smart Bin can make recycling accessible for everyone
