Problem Statement:
One in four items are wrongly recycled.
75% of all waste is recyclable.
28% of waste deposited in landfills can be composted.
I was inspired to create a better way for individuals to recycle.
What it does
You can snap a picture of what you're throwing away and get quick and nuanced feedback about whether it should be recyclable.
How we built it
Using Flutter for easy cross platform development and Firebase for the "Google" full stack integration.
Challenges we ran into
Getting the result to be shown to the user in a quick way and designing the app to be intuitive.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Being able to fully onboard the user and make it so the result is nuanced, quick, and can be saved to a gallery, leading to a solid multi-feature base to help users recycle correctly and more.
What we learned
The biggest thing we learned how to do was operate as a team. Scheduling meetings, stand-ups, and keeping relevant communication is something I am very grateful to learn in this project. We also learned how to develop a full stack mobile app using Flutter and Firebase, a common tech stack for an easy quality of life developer experience and hackathons.
What's next for RecycleMe
We are looking to release the app on TestFlight for iOS after fixing up some relevant security issues. Hopefully a full release of the app onto the app store will be possible by the end of the summer.
