One of the challenges in recycling is not knowing where to classify our trash. Most people are on their phones and we figured that if we could create a mobile application that would help the user identify and classify the objects they are disposing of, this would aid in lowering the percentage of contamination on our blue bins.

What it does

The Recycle Hero mobile application determines what type of object the user's camera is focusing on and classifies the object on whether or not it is recyclable.

How we built it

We used the TensorFlow learner in analyzing images and determining what type of objects the images have. Using the learner model generated, we created a mobile application that would allow the user to take a picture of an object using their phone's camera and determine what type of object it is and if it is recyclable or not.

Challenges we ran into

One of the challenges we experienced is that the learner model we generated is not building correctly for our application.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of having been able to create something that anyone can use given the short amount of time we had for this hackathon.

What we learned

We learned more about machine learning tools and how to port them into an iOS application.

What's next for Recycle Hero

We would like to work on a better UI and the ability to locate the nearest Recycling and SAFE (Solvents, Automotive, Flammable, E-Waste) Centers for the appropriate waste that is being thrown out.
