Inspiration
I got the idea of creating a recycling app because at school, sometimes I struggle to decide whether a piece of trash is recyclable or not. Also, I notice classmates throw recyclable objects into the wrong trash can. In addition, I brought this up with my parents and they said that they also struggle to decide and the app would be very useful.
What it does
The app that I created helps users to decide if a piece of trash is recyclable. Just take a picture and ai will tell you if it is recyclable or not.
How we built it
Using MIT app inventor, I coded a camera component and the AI component. I coded the camera to send a picture that the user has taken to the AI to analyze. Then it will display the result in a textbox.
Challenges we ran into
The challenge that I ran into was making it unique. To fix this, I made the app explain why instead of just telling you what to do with your trash. This helps the user learn
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Some accomplishments I'm proud of is how user friendly the app is. It is very simple and users can start using the app right away.
What we learned
I learned that recycling isn't as common as I originally thought. if more people recycled, the benefits would be massive. Also, I was familiarized with AI. It was eye-opening to see the capabilities of AI.
What's next for Recycle GPT
Many people are a bit lazy to recycle, so Recycle GPT can be used to develop hardware to auto-sort trash item to maximize recycling.
