Inspiration
Of recent times, climate change has been an emerging global issue and its effects are being witnessed almost everywhere affecting almost every person on Earth. Waste is one of the major factors contributing to climate change. They include plastics, electronic wastes, glass and so on. My inspiration arises from the need to create an environment that is healthy and sustainable. I came up with this idea because I want to contribute to the preservation of earth and environmental sustainability.
What it does
RECYCLE AID rewards individuals for their contribution to environmental sustenance and wellness. It gives rewards which could be tokens, coupons,or gifts and many more to individuals for their collection of recyclable materials like bottles, glass, plastics, paper, electronics and so on. By so doing it encourages and motivates individuals to carry out environmentally friendly acts, which also earns them rewards for their good deeds. They can retrieve this rewards once they reach the minimum quantity (threshold) required. This is designed with the aim to increase the frequency in which products are recycled and to reduce the amount of recyclable materials dumped in water bodies and degrading the environment.
How I designed it
Since this is not functional yet, it is designed using a user friendly and easy to use software and interface. It respects user privacy and protects user information from harm.
How it works
RECYCLE AID is a mobile application, it is also designed to exists as a web application for individuals who find it hard to use the mobile application for reasons like low internet connectivity and coverage. The software is designed to be user friendly, interactive and easy to use. When it is installed and launched, users will sign up using their email addresses or popular applications like Google, Facebook and LinkedIn after that they will see a tutorial on how to redeem rewards, minimum threshold required for different materials, and so on. Users will fill in personal information which will be protected. RECYCLE AID uses a phone/device based GPS such as the system used by Uber, to track users’ physical location. hen users achieve/pass the minimum threshold, they will notify the app and select his/her location using the GPS available on the application, upon receiving the above information, dispatch will be sent to verify, collect the recyclables. After which the user can choose any means to claim his/her rewards, either through Amazon, cash, tokens and so on. Finally, the dispatch collector will transfer the recyclables to the nearest recycling unit for processing.
Challenges I ran into
While building up the project, I realised that people living in areas with low internet connectivity might not have a smooth flow with the app, so there will be a web version which can be accessed using an internet browser.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I am very happy about the fact that I have created this design which gears towards achievement of environmental sustainability. I am proud of the fact that this can have positive impacts on individuals, society and environment.
What I learned
During the workshops I leaned a lot about entrepreneurship, digital fabrication, and many more. Over the course of this competition, I have also learnt that every idea can be built upon and ideas can come from the strangest places.
What's next for RECYCLE AID
I hope to create better UI and also insert an interactive bot that will give immediate response, help and assistance to users' query and implement it.
Lastly, I want to use this opportunity to thank Steel City Codes India for this amazing opportunity given to students to explore and utilise their skills and talents for a good cause.
