Inspiration
It was a cold and stormy thursday evening, you're prepping your garbage for tomorrow's pickup. A dilemma is in front of you: do chatime cups go into the recycling or garbage bins? Recyc-AI is here for you; to let you know where exactly your garbage goes - with the power of AI.
What it does
Recyc-AI is a simple app that lets you know what bin to put your various garbage, either by looking it up in a database, or by sending a image url and having AI classify it for you!
How we built it
Recyc-AI is built using React Native for the most amount of compatibility, and uses Tensorflow.js along with Microsoft Azure Custom Vision to help you sort.
Challenges we ran into
Firstly, AI is hard, especially for people who have never used it before. Working with brand new software and APIs during a limited time period may be fun, but we struggled to get Tensorflow to work as originally planned. (It may not sort in the way we wanted it to...)
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Anthony R: Designing the UI. Anthony T: Working on the database. Jacob: Being exposed to the Tensorflow library.
What I learned
We learned a lot (about ourselves and the code)! New libraries, lots of code, how long we can stay awake and the extent of our mental capacity at 3:00 AM was a great experience.
What's next for Recyc-AI
A better implementation of the Image Recognition, and a built-in camera system (instead of using URLs).
