Inspiration

Conventional methods of storage such as using fridges are very expensive. Some middle-class and low-class farmers cannot afford this. Furthermore about 20-40% of the fruits and vegetables produced by fruits and vegetable farmers go to waste. We need a cheaper method that can be used to prevent their deterioration and also a better way to recover energy from deteriorated fruits and vegetables.

What it does

The evaporative cooling system is used to provide a cooling effect to prevent these fruits and vegetables from deteriorating. Spoiled fruits and vegetables contain a lot of energy that can be used for cooking. A floating drum biodigester or a fixed-dome shape biodigester is used to recover energy from spoiled fruits and vegetables.

How I built it

In the construction of the evaporative cooler. A cooler pad is made of banana fiber and is used to retain water in front of a suction fan. As the suction fan drives in the air through the cooler pad, the water evaporates and cooling and humidification take place. The floating drum biodigester is constructed using galvanized steel and aluminum sheets, and the fixed-dome shape biodigester is constructed using cement, metals, bricks, and reinforced concrete.

Challenges I ran into

For this project, I need about 400,000 Ksh to buy the necessary tools for the job and to acquire all the materials needed before I begin to do installation services for farmers.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I'm glad that during the acclimation challenge, they awarded me funding of 90,000. Right now I am looking for 310,000 Ksh in order to actualize this idea.

What I learned

A lot of fruits and vegetables get spoiled and go to waste. If we can find a way to solve this we will be able to reduce the rate of hunger in our country because some of this food can be directed to areas where the is an insufficient amount of food.

What's next for CHEAPEST COOLER FOR FARMERS; BIODIGESTER FOR THEIR COOKING

We are hoping to win this hackathon and get the funding to establish ourselves physically and we begin offering our installation services of evaporative cooling systems and biodigesters.
