Inspiration
We were inspired by a simple observation: people often become disconnected gradually, long before they ask for help. They stop joining activities, talking to people, or doing things they once enjoyed.
We asked ourselves: What if we could help someone take one small step toward connection before they reach a crisis point?
That question became the foundation for ReConnect.
What it does
ReConnect is an AI-powered engagement platform that helps people experiencing social isolation reconnect with activities, people, and communities.
Instead of overwhelming someone with advice or a long list of activities, ReConnect finds one small, realistic step based on their interests and comfort level.
It then gradually moves them from:
Isolation → Engagement → Connection → Community → Belonging
If someone needs serious help, ReConnect is designed to connect them with appropriate human or professional support rather than trying to replace it.
How we built it
We designed ReConnect around the Engagement Ladder.
The system considers a person's interests, preferences, comfort level, and availability to determine the smallest next step they are likely to take.
For example:
Music interest → one song → 5-minute challenge → local event → invite a friend → join a community.
We focused on the experience and logic behind the product, creating the user journey, interaction flow, and product concept rather than building a full production application.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was avoiding the idea of simply creating another AI wellness chatbot.
We realized that telling someone to “be more social” or recommending dozens of activities isn't enough.
The real challenge was figuring out:
What is the smallest step someone who is already disengaged might actually say yes to?
We also had to think carefully about safety. ReConnect should encourage connection, but it should never diagnose mental health conditions or pretend to replace professional support.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of turning a very large and difficult problem into a simple idea:
One small step at a time.
Our biggest accomplishment is the Engagement Ladder — a framework that transforms a generic activity recommendation into a progressive journey from isolation toward real-world connection.
We are also proud that our success metric isn't time spent inside the app.
The best outcome for ReConnect is when someone no longer needs the app because they have reconnected with people and activities in the real world.
What we learned
We learned that solving a complex problem doesn't always require a complicated solution.
The biggest insight was that engagement itself can be an intervention point.
We also learned that AI should not always try to solve the entire problem. Sometimes its most valuable role is simply identifying the right next step and helping a person reach the right human being when technology isn't enough.
What's next for ReConnect
Our next step is to turn the concept into a working prototype and test the Engagement Ladder with a small group of users.
We would start with a college or community setting and measure:
Are people taking the recommended steps? Are they moving up the Engagement Ladder? Are they forming new connections? Are they participating in communities? Does engagement become more sustainable over time?
From there, we would improve the personalization, build stronger community partnerships, and eventually expand ReConnect across different age groups and settings.
Our long-term vision is simple: help people take the next small step toward a life that feels more connected.
