Inspiration
Human happiness is directly linked to their mental and physical health. We saw a paradox within social media. The platforms that are indispensable to our digital connection are the same tools that
The impact of social media on our lives is undeniable. Their ability to digitally connect us in ways we never thought was possible. Through text, images, videos, and audios, were able to bridge gaps and foster a truly global community. However, while these platforms have become an integral part, we couldn't ignore the shifts in our relationship with technology.
In a world filled with likes, shares, and notifications, we discovered that the constant stream of information always left us craving for more, endlessly chasing fleeting bursts of dopamine. While not inherently evil, the algorithms designed to keep us engaged had also left us craving more validation in a digital world.
At ‘Reconnect’, we believe in the human aspect of connection. We believe in restoring balance- creating an app that empowers you to regain control over your digital life. Our mission is to address the impacts of social media exposure on our well-being and mental health. We need to break free from the addictive patterns and microdoses of dopamine that keeps us endlessly scrolling.
‘Reconnect’ is your friend, providing you with a space for mindful reflection and intentional digital usage. We are here to remind you that you are more than your screen time, more than likes and shares. Your worth is not defined by virtual applause but by the authentic connections you cultivate.
Our app curates activities that encourage you to explore life beyond the screen - from moments of self-care to meaningful interactions with loved ones. Through a gamified approach, we inspire you to detach from the digital noise and embrace a balanced lifestyle.
This is your invitation to join the movement - a movement towards conscious technology usage, digital balance, and nurturing our mental well-being. Welcome to ‘Reconnect;, where we empower you to rise above the addictive algorithms and embrace mindful living.

How we built it?
Step 1: User Research and Validation
We began by conducting a comprehensive survey to understand the challenges faced by our target audience and validate the need for a solution. Additionally, we conducted in-depth interviews with three participants to gain valuable insights and gather firsthand experiences related to social media usage and its impact on their well-being.
Step 2: Identifying User Demographics
Based on the survey and interviews, we identified our primary user demographics – individuals aged between 18 and 40 who sought a calming and simple user interface to support their journey toward a healthier lifestyle. Understanding our users' needs and preferences laid the foundation for our app's design and features.
Step 3: Brainstorming and Ideation
As a team, we engaged in brainstorming sessions to generate potential features and functionalities that align with our users' requirements. We focused on creating a meaningful and engaging experience that fosters mindful digital unplugging. For collaborative work, we used Notion to track our notes, research, and meeting notes; we used Figjam to keep track of all of the potential UIs from other apps that we were impressed by their gamification and to create the user flow.
Step 4: Design and Prototyping
The design phase was pivotal in shaping 'Reconnect's' look and feel. We invested significant effort to ensure that the user interface matched our vision – calming, intuitive, and stress-free. Creating design prototypes allowed us to visualize the app's flow and gather feedback from team members and potential users. We created
Step 5: Feature Prioritization
Given the limited time available, we carefully prioritized the features to ensure a seamless user experience. The core features included a mobile app, a landing page to introduce 'Reconnect,' and three distinct categories – exercise, interact, and meditate – each offering 3-5 activities to engage users mindfully.
For this app, the engineering team built the app using Pyside6, which is part of the Qt for python
Given time constraints, the tasks that were completed are as follows:
- Design a complete user flow for the app.
- Design the UI prototype for the application
- Code the UI design which included
- Splash page (with value proposition)
- Sign up page
- Homepage with the various categories
- Exercise category selected
- Post-task survey
- Task completion page
Challenges we ran into
- Pinpointing user needs accurately was more challenging than anticipated, but we remained dedicated to developing a solution that catered to our users' requirements.
- Our primary focus was to develop a strong and visually appealing user interface, but we had to make tradeoffs in implementing functional buttons and features due to time constraints.
- Constraints in further user research
- Constraints in creating multiple user interfaces for testing purposes.
- Constraints on coding functionality within the prototype
- It was the first time our engineering team used PyQt5 for development, and this introduced a learning curve. Additionally, we had no access to the enterprise version, slowing down the coding and design process. Additionally, it was the first time one of our engineers had to use Git and Pycharm to match IDEs.
- The team members were scattered across different time zones. - the product manager in Dubai and the engineering team and designer based in California – coordinating schedules and communication required effective time management and clear communication channels.
Accomplishments we are proud of
I say this wholeheartedly, this was an incredible team to do the hackathon with. We are extremely proud of the team synergy and dynamics to come together to solve a problem millions of people struggle with.
We are extremely proud of the development of the user flow, and designing our first prototype within such time constraints. We are proud that the engineering team gained new insights on how to manage themselves and split tasks and code the UI into Python. We are proud of doing all of this within the span of the hackathon, dealing with all the challenges, and delivering something with passion.
What we learned
Ahmad - Product Manager
I gained extremely valuable insights in how to manage a team and think about how to organize and motivate my team into coming together to solve a problem. To take an idea from an abstract, use data-driven surveys and research to propose potential solutions, and set the team with the right user stories for success is an extremely valuable lesson I learned.
Edith - Product Designer
I learned the importance of delivering products with a strong focus on design. I learned how to communicate my ideas among the engineering team, set deadlines for myself, and work through various iterations to show the team and bring a prototype from ideation to life using Figma.
Ben and Beatrice - Engineering team
We learned how to translate real-life problems into coding tasks. We learned how to communicate our technical knowledge with a non-technical team in order to communicate certain challenges and resources needed for success. We learned how to use PyQt in a time crunch and build features with it.
What’s next?
The goal is to complete the creation of the mobile application because we see the value it promises its users.
- Finish coding the prototype
- Addition of functionality to the various buttons
- Set up the tracking metrics to help users feel motivated about their accomplishments
- Market the apps in various circles for user testing. This includes productivity groups on Discord, Reddit, and X/Twitter.
- Launching the product on ProductHunt for further exposure.
- Manage the deployment of the app and reviews and add additional functionality based on upcoming user interviews.
