Inspiration
We never really revisit our bookmarks, we find something useful in the spur of the moment and save it- and it stays there.
What it does
- Recollect turns your chrome bookmarks into a discovery engine, automatically searching through them whenever you research a new topic- and show you relevant bookmarks that you might have saved in the past. Without you ever asking for them.
- You can also search against any keyword you come against while browsing the web by right clicking on it and clicking "Search bookmarks for"
How we built it
Built it using Bolt and Supabase, used Supabase's pgvector extension and openai embeddings to make searching through saved bookmarks better.
Challenges we ran into
A chrome extension by itself cannot communicate with a db and perform all the functions we needed it to, so the current implementation has 2 way communcation between a webapp and a chrome extension- where both do what they are good at. The webapp handles the heavy lifting and the extension shows us the results when we need them.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The app works great, syncing and searching works great and as expected.
What's next for Recollect
- Feature to save paragraphs from certain sites as bookmarks and being able to search through them in our knowledge base.
- There is a lot of work to be done to make the search better and more efficient, due to the nature of vector embeddings sometimes we get unrelated results.
- Currently the webapp needs to stay open for it to work- need to transform that into a background process.
- The search functionality can be extended to web history as well.
