Inspiration

As students of NYU Tandon, we spend most of our time in Brooklyn. Brooklyn, like many urban areas, has been hit hard by the opioid epidemic and other forms of addiction. In 2018, Brooklyn had the second-highest number of opioid overdose deaths of any borough in New York City. The prevalence of addiction in Brooklyn has created a significant need for resources and services to support those struggling with addiction and their loved ones. This need is particularly acute in communities that are historically underserved or marginalized, such as communities of color and low-income communities. Research has shown that these communities often face additional barriers to accessing addiction treatment and other forms of support, such as a lack of insurance, language barriers, and stigma. A drug addiction consulting business can help fill this need by providing tailored, culturally sensitive support and resources to these communities. By providing one-on-one consulting and coaching, intelligent AI chat support, and motivations, Reclaim Life (our app name) can help individuals and families affected by addiction to navigate the complex and often overwhelming treatment system, access necessary resources and support, and build the skills and resilience necessary to maintain recovery.

What it does

Reclaim Life has four main functions for now: Community feature, motivation, Progress tracker, and Intelligent AI chat support. We have successfully implemented the first three features of our app. The community feature is basically to connect people with drug addiction and try to get them to express themselves. The community connect feature can be used to promote events, webinars, and other educational opportunities that are designed to raise awareness of addiction and recovery resources in the community. It can be used to share resources with individuals and families who are affected by addiction, such as support group meeting times and locations, local treatment options, and relevant research and news articles. By providing these resources through the community connect feature, the business can ensure that individuals have easy access to up-to-date and relevant information about addiction and recovery. The feature can be used to facilitate connections between individuals and families affected by addiction, as well as between individuals and local support groups and treatment providers. The motivation feature helps the user to distract from their thoughts and keep them motivated by the thoughts of great writers and artists. We also want to add podcasts to this section. So that people can hear that whenever they feel the urge to drink alcohol or drugs, they can deviate their minds by listening to their favorite podcasts. Intelligent AI chats support can be available 24/7, which can be particularly valuable for individuals who need support outside of traditional business hours or who may be hesitant to reach out for help in person. It can provide an immediate response and offer guidance on the next steps, such as how to access treatment or emergency support services. The Progress Tracker feature can track users' sober days, and personal goals and help them to feel proud of themselves and stay motivated throughout.

How we built it

We built the front-end part of the app using Android Native, Jetpack Compose UI Framework, Kotlin, and the back-end with Retrofit REST Client, SQLite Local Database, NodeJs, ExpressJs, and MongoDB. We used Platforms like Render.com, Cyclic.sh and Actions on google to build this app.

Challenges we ran into

During the hackathon, our team encountered a few challenges while building an Android app aimed at assisting individuals who are struggling with substance addiction. One of the main challenges we faced was the inability to integrate our chatbot due to a time constraint. We also had to design the app's user interface ourselves without a designer, making it difficult to determine if the design was adequate. Additionally, implementing the numerous required features posed a significant hurdle.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Despite the aforementioned challenges, our team completed the minimum viable product within a day, and the app was robust with no bugs. We successfully integrated our backend service for the community feature, which is thread-based and allows users to support one another in their fight against addiction by commenting and adding new threads. We also successfully designed the UI on our own. Overall, despite the difficulties we faced, we are proud of what we achieved in the hackathon and the app we built, which we believe has the potential to help many individuals who are struggling with addiction.

What's next for Reclaim Life

  • Complete the Intelligent Chatbot functionality
  • Connect users with prevention clubs
  • Create/host/organize/give info about prevention events
  • Create a weekly tracker for the user
  • Give the user a new fact daily about the disadvantages of addiction (Use some metrics for the results)
  • Pairing people based on their similarities
