Inspiration
No matter the country, gender, or race, we all love when our grandma cooks our favorite food. It just tastes deliciously different. No one can replicate it. However, how long can grandma keep the recipe in her memory? We all forget things as we grow older, and, unfortunately, it’s no different for our beloved grandma. Due to this, we wanted to create a site where grandmas, or anyone really, can create their recipes and store them on their computers. We wanted it to be as simple as possible so that even grandmas (who had no clue about the internet just a few decades ago) could use it.
What it does
Recipesia is a simple and extremely user-friendly website that allows you to create cookbook pages and store them on your computer as PDFs. Originally, it was designed to have signups and logins, with data being stored, although, we realized that if someone such as grandma is also using this, we would want it to be even more undemanding. We know how grandmas can be challenging when it comes to giving data online, which is why we wanted to create this site completely free of storing any data (so that grandmas don’t think that we are stealing their precious recipes)
How we built it
We originally built it with firebase as we had a login page but later changed it to be just simple HTML, JS, and CSS. Additionally, we also used a library called Cropper.js to crop the size of the images in real-time that you input.
Challenges we ran into
- We made a login page, although soon realized that we did not need it so we had to redo some parts to make the website function without a login page.
- Due to #1, we also ran a bit short on time.
- As we weren’t using node, any frameworks, or libraries, it was a bit difficult getting the user data and transferring it to a different page.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were proud of the fact that our website was actually functional in the short amount of time that we had. We did run into a few bugs while deploying the website (one of the places that we are weak at performing) but we're still able to get the website online which is something that we were extremely satisfied with.
What we learned
We learned a ton, including how to use firebase, how to deploy websites, and how to make a multi-page website without any external frameworks or libraries.
What's next for Recipesia
Recipesia currently only has one outline for the cookbook page, therefore, we hope to add multiple different formats with the ability to change colors in the future. We also want to add a feature where you are able to remove the information that you don't want to add. Finally, we also are strong believers in the importance of UI/UX which is something that we would improve on further in the future.
