Inspiration

Everyone alway has a hard time deciding what they should eat for lunch or dinner, especially if they have to cook the dish themselves. To lessen time that is wasted on deciding what to eat, we made Recipes for You!

What it does

Recipes for You is a website where people can enter what ingredients they have available in their kitchen and see what dishes they can make with these ingredients. Users can also filter the list by cuisine types, type of diet, intolerances, or search a recipe by keywords. Once a user selects a dish they want to make, they can see the instructions on how to make the dish, see an image of the dish, as well as download the instructions so users can keep it for later use or share the recipe with others!

How we built it

We built it using Velo by Wix, Node.js, and Spoonacular API.

Challenges we ran into

The main challenge was creating the backend. We decided to make a REST API for our backend, and this was the first time we did that. However, it turned out that Velo does not use a REST API, so we had to rewrite all of the code. Also, this was the first time we used Velo, and it was really confusing at first but we figured it out.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

In this project, we are proud that we figured out how to use Velo.

What we learned

We learned how to use Velo.

What's next for Recipes For You

There are still a lot of features we wanted to add, but didn't get the time to:

  • Add a discussion forum so people on the site can comment on different recipes and discuss with others
  • If a certain ingredient is missing to create a dish, the user can select to buy the missing ingredient and the website will show any nearby local grocery stores from where the user is currently located.
  • Add more filters for the recipe list
