Inspiration

One of the members had this idea a while ago, after having issues finding recipes to use. The hope was to be able to make use of leftover ingredients and find easy recipes to limit waste.

What it does

This website has a database of recipes, which will be displayed on the home page. Additionally, there is a recipe finder page where users can search for a recipe by name or included ingredients, which will return recipes that fit.

How we built it

This website was built with the Django framework, and deployed with pythonanywhere. Local versions use PostgreSQL, but the pythonanywhere deployment uses MySQL.

Challenges we ran into

Throughout the hackathon, we ran into multiple issues regarding "set up". This involved python versions, python packages, PostgreSQL installations, and more.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we have a functioning website! We are also proud of how much we learned in the last 24 hours. At the beginning, our knowledge of Django and HTML was minimal to moderate, and now we feel much more proficient with Django and HTML. We are also of our collaboration skills, which greatly helped us succeed.

What we learned

As mentioned above, both of us learned a lot about Django and HTML. Additionally, learning how to fix errors for a new tool quickly is a skill that we both had to hone, due to the time limit.

What's next for Recipe Finder

Eventually we hope to add functionality that will display to users what they would need to buy, if they were missing any ingredients. We'd also like to modify the models/how the recipes are stored, such as moving away from text/charfields. Lastly, adding more search options, such as amount of time, and other filtering to further customize searching would greatly improve the user experience.
