Abstract

Texture.io is an IoT device that captures images of texts and translates and displays them in braille in real time. This device aims to help decrease the high braille illiteracy rates by helping blind children to learn to read at a young age. Current devices are immensely costly and limited in the resources available. With texture.io, blind kids can read any children’s book regardless of the existence of a braille translated version. Similarly, books are readily found in any classroom and require little to no work for the teacher or parent to set up compared to online documents. Texture.io will utilize a camera embedded into glasses to capture images of books and use OCR to read and finally display the characters in braille one line at a time. It will do so on a handheld device through solenoid pins. Texture.io also aims to enhance comprehension by voicing words as they are “read” through pressure sensors.
