Inspiration

Modern group chats have become the unofficial operating system for teams, startups, student projects, communities, and online collaboration. But important commitments constantly disappear inside chaotic message threads. Someone says “I’ll handle it tomorrow,” another person changes the deadline three hours later, and eventually nobody remembers what was actually promised.

We were inspired by the idea of “bringing receipts” to digital collaboration.

ReceiptRoom turns messy conversations into a structured accountability system. Instead of manually scrolling through hundreds of messages, users can instantly see who committed to what, which promises remain unconfirmed, where contradictions exist, and which dependencies could break the workflow.

We wanted the experience to feel less like a boring dashboard and more like a forensic investigation board — something between a project manager, an AI investigator, and a receipt printer exposing the truth hidden in conversations.

What it does

ReceiptRoom is a full-stack AI web app that converts unstructured group chats from WhatsApp, Discord, Slack, Telegram, or pasted text into an interactive Accountability Command Board.

The system automatically extracts:

  • Commitments and promises
  • Owners and responsible people
  • Deadlines and delivery dates
  • Contradictions between statements
  • Unconfirmed promises
  • Dependency risks
  • Escalation signals
  • Missing follow-ups

The UI presents this information through multiple forensic-style modules:

Promise Ledger

A receipt-paper styled ledger showing every detected commitment with:

  • owner
  • promise
  • deadline
  • confidence score
  • confirmation status

Owner Board

A responsibility matrix grouping commitments by person.

Risk Radar

Flags:

  • contradictory statements
  • blocked tasks
  • unclear ownership
  • overdue promises
  • dependency bottlenecks

Evidence Quote Cards

Every extracted insight is backed by exact message excerpts from the original conversation, allowing users to verify AI conclusions instantly.

Timeline View

Displays how commitments evolved over time.

Follow-up Message Generator

Generates professional follow-up messages like:

  • “Hey, just checking on the API integration you mentioned for Friday.”
  • “Can you confirm ownership for the deployment task?”

Saved Demo Boards

Users can save and revisit generated boards for demos, audits, or project tracking.

The visual design intentionally resembles thermal receipt paper with:

  • red forensic risk stamps
  • warning badges
  • owner identity chips
  • evidence highlights
  • investigation-style layouts

How we built it

We built ReceiptRoom as a modern AI-first full-stack application.

Frontend

  • React + Next.js
  • Tailwind CSS
  • Framer Motion for animations
  • Custom forensic-themed UI components
  • Responsive dashboard layout

Backend

  • Node.js API layer
  • AI-powered extraction pipeline
  • Structured parsing engine
  • Session-based board persistence

AI Processing Pipeline

The pipeline:

  1. Cleans messy chat formatting
  2. Separates speakers and timestamps
  3. Detects promises and commitments
  4. Maps owners to responsibilities
  5. Extracts deadlines
  6. Detects contradictions and uncertainty
  7. Generates structured accountability objects

We engineered prompt chains specifically for:

  • commitment extraction
  • contradiction detection
  • confidence scoring
  • dependency analysis
  • follow-up generation

Data Layer

Saved boards are stored using lightweight persistence for fast demo deployment and one-click hosting.

Deployment

The app is designed for instant deployment using:

  • Vercel
  • Supabase/Firebase
  • Environment-based configuration
  • Demo-ready sample datasets

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was dealing with messy real-world chat data.

Unlike structured project management tools, group chats contain:

  • incomplete sentences
  • sarcasm
  • vague commitments
  • changing deadlines
  • multiple conversations happening simultaneously

Another difficult problem was contradiction detection. Humans naturally understand that:

“I’ll finish tonight” and later: “Actually I need two more days”

represent conflicting delivery expectations.

Teaching an AI system to reliably identify those shifts required extensive prompt engineering and structured extraction logic.

We also spent significant time balancing:

  • visual complexity
  • readability
  • forensic aesthetics
  • dashboard usability

The “receipt-paper investigation board” style was visually unique but difficult to implement cleanly across responsive layouts.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are especially proud of:

  • Creating a genuinely unique interface instead of another generic AI dashboard
  • Turning chaotic conversations into structured accountability systems
  • Building explainable AI outputs with evidence-backed quote cards
  • Making the experience feel useful, visual, and emotionally engaging
  • Designing an AI workflow that surfaces risks humans often miss manually
  • Combining productivity tooling with forensic storytelling aesthetics

The Evidence Quote system became one of our favorite features because users can immediately trace every extracted insight back to the exact source messages.

What we learned

This project taught us that AI becomes dramatically more trustworthy when users can inspect the evidence behind decisions.

We also learned:

  • prompt engineering alone is not enough without strong structure
  • explainability improves user confidence significantly
  • visual storytelling matters in productivity software
  • messy communication data is far harder than clean datasets
  • accountability workflows are surprisingly universal across teams

Most importantly, we learned that people do not just want summaries — they want clarity, ownership, and proof.

What's next for ReceiptRoom

Our roadmap includes:

  • Direct Slack, Discord, and WhatsApp integrations
  • Live meeting transcript ingestion
  • Team analytics and accountability scoring
  • AI-generated escalation recommendations
  • Multi-board collaboration
  • Relationship and communication pattern graphs
  • Automated reminder scheduling
  • Enterprise audit exports
  • Cross-project dependency intelligence

We also want to expand ReceiptRoom into a broader “AI accountability infrastructure” platform for remote teams, startups, communities, and online organizations.

Long term, we envision ReceiptRoom becoming the system that helps teams answer one critical question instantly:

“Who promised what, and what happened next?”
