Inspiration

Receipts contain dates that can save money, but those dates are easy to miss in a long block of text. ReceiptRelay started from a small question: can a first-time builder make the next action obvious without sending a receipt to a server?

What it does

ReceiptRelay is a privacy-first browser app for students and shoppers. Paste receipt text and it extracts the merchant, total, purchase date, return-window checkpoint, and warranty checkpoint. Each result shows the text pattern that triggered it, plus a confidence signal, so the user can check the evidence before acting. The reset action clears the prior result for the next receipt.

How we built it

This is a new project built from an empty folder for Build With AI: Basics. The interface uses plain HTML, CSS, and JavaScript and runs entirely in the browser. The parser uses small, explainable patterns for dates, amounts, return periods, and warranty periods. There is no upload, database, or network request for receipt text. The repository includes the planning artifacts scope.md, prd.md, and spec.md.

What we learned

The most useful lesson was to cut the scope to one complete loop: paste, parse, explain, reset. Planning before coding made it easier to keep the product coherent. We also learned that confidence is more useful when it is paired with visible evidence instead of presented as a mysterious score.

What's next

A production version could support more receipt formats, locale-aware dates, calendar export, and user-controlled local reminders while keeping the same evidence-first privacy model.
