Inspiration

Looking at the official Canadian government website for recall and safety alerts, we realized that it was difficult for the average Canadian to read the information posted, especially on a mobile device. We wanted to ensure that everyone is able to stay up-to-date regarding any product issues and is able to keep themselves and their loved ones safe.

What it does

The application fetches data from the official Canadian government website on recalls, advisories, and safety alerts. This data is then displayed in a concise and mobile-friendly UI/UX where users can read about all the latest issues.

How we built it

We used Supabase to store all the data fetched from the website and connected it to our front-end. We utilized React Native since we wanted our application to follow the design principle of mobile-first, and successfully created components that accepted dynamic props and displayed important information for the users to read.

Challenges we ran into

The hardest challenge we faced throughout the project was deciding how to access the data from the Canadian government's website since there was not dedicated API to retrieve the data.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The biggest accomplishment is creating a finished product in the 24-hour time limit. We're proud to have our features working and being able to connect every part that each member completed.

What we learned

This was our first mobile app using the Expo framework. As a team, we adjusted our tech stack, fitting the tracks we wanted to compete in.

What's next for Recall Safety Canada

Hopefully, we can deploy our app, Recall Safety Canada, onto the Play Store for mass consumers to use.
