Inspiration
- You get better at speaking by speaking more. The problem is that most AI conversation practice gets boring fast. We wanted to give people something they would actually have an opinion about, so we built the practice around debates.
What it does
- Rebutio lets you debate an AI about topics you care about while practicing spoken English. After each debate, it looks at your pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, pacing, and fluency, then gives you specific feedback on what to improve.
How we built it
- We built Rebutio as a voice-first app. AI handles the conversation, transcription, and coaching, while speech models look more closely at things like pronunciation and phonemes. We combine both so the feedback is based on how you spoke, not only what you said.
Challenges we ran into
- The hardest part was getting the debate to actually feel like a conversation. Early versions felt too much like recording a message, waiting for an AI response, and pressing another button. We spent a lot of time working on the timing, voice playback, prompts, and flow so you can just listen and respond.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- We're especially happy with the feedback after a debate. Rebutio can point to specific pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary problems instead of giving vague advice like "work on your speaking." It can even let you hear how a word should be pronounced and practice it again.
What we learned
- The topic matters a lot. People speak more naturally, and speak more, when they actually care about what they're saying. We also found that corrections are more useful after the conversation, instead of constantly interrupting someone while they're trying to speak.
What's next for Rebutio
- We want more types of conversations beyond debates, better topics, and coaching that gets more personal over time. The goal is for Rebutio to remember the speaking problems you keep running into and give you more chances to work on them.
