Inspiration
Nevada students face a significant advising gap. Many students struggle to navigate prerequisites, transfer pathways, and career alignment. As students within the NSHE system, we have personally experienced how overwhelming academic planning can be. We were inspired to build a tool that replaces uncertainty with structure, giving students clear, visual guidance tailored to Nevada institutions.
What it does
RebelPath is an AI-powered academic planning tool designed for CCSD and NSHE students. It allows users to select a track within a major and instantly generates a structured trajectory map, including next-course guidance and a 4-year semester plan. Beyond coursework, RebelPath connects students to internships, engineering clubs, and Las Vegas tech events, aligning academic decisions with real-world opportunities. It transforms complex requirements into a clear, actionable roadmap.
How we built it
We built RebelPath using a conversational AI interface connected to structured academic pathway logic. The frontend allows users to either type prompts or select guided actions. On the backend, we implemented logic that maps chosen tracks to prerequisite chains and semester-by-semester plans. We focused on clarity, visual structure, and stability to ensure the demo accurately reflects how students would navigate their academic journey.
Challenges we ran into
One major challenge was balancing ambition with feasibility. Academic planning systems are complex, and integrating institutional data in a short hackathon timeframe required us to narrow our scope. We also worked through frontend and backend integration challenges while ensuring the user experience remained intuitive. Merging features into a cohesive flow required iteration and strong team communication.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of building a working prototype that translates academic requirements into a visual, structured roadmap. Instead of generating generic text responses, RebelPath produces actionable academic pathways and connects students to local opportunities. We are especially proud of creating a tool grounded specifically in Nevada’s educational ecosystem.
What we learned
We learned the importance of scoping effectively and focusing on core functionality first. Clear communication between frontend and backend development was critical to building a stable prototype. We also learned that structured guidance is more impactful than overwhelming users with information: clarity drives usability.
What's next for RebelPath
Next, we plan to expand beyond Computer Science into additional majors across NSHE institutions. Future development includes deeper institutional integration, scholarship matching, mentorship connections, and advisor-facing tools. Our long-term vision is to scale RebelPath across Nevada to support students statewide
