Inspiration

As a lover of debate, I often cajole my two younger siblings to go head to head against each other and debate it out. In these tournaments, I would be the tournament director, judge, coach, and emotional support buddy. Spreading my passion for debate to others is something I truly enjoy, but the issue that always came up in these mini-tournaments was the fact that I couldn't fulfill my four roles all at once. My brother would say that he would forget my feedback, or my sister would say that I was biased. The idea for ReasynAI came from them—to solve the problems they experienced.

What it does

ReasynAI has two main modes:

  • Practice mode
  • Debate mode

In practice mode, you can debate against AI. Whether it's to prepare for a tournament or just for fun, ReasynAI offers an amazing experience. My favorite thing about Reasyn is that due to the having AI opponents, you can practice any speech of the round, whether it be the rebuttal or the final focus. This is something that I believe will help a lot of people, as I notice many debaters struggle with later round speeches due to lack of preparation. After the round is completed, the AI offers you personalized feedback so you can always keep improving your skills.

In debate mode, ReasynAI flows the round and acts as a judge. After tournaments, I always find myself wondering which rounds I won and which ones I lost. With Reasyn, I'll instantly know the answer, and if it's the one I don't like, I'll always know how to bounce back next time. As for its flowing capabilities, they are a huge lifesaver -- debaters can spend more time prepping for their next speeches rather than just note taking.

How we built it

ReasynAI was built using Cursor as the proprietary IDE with React as the main language. For the AI features, we used OpenAI's Whisper model for high-quality speech-to-text transcription and OpenAI's TTS for text-to-speech so the AI can live debate against users.

Challenges we ran into

The toughest challenge in building ReasynAI was refining the personalized feedback and speaker point scoring. I tested this feature countless times and each time I refined the feedback format just a little until I felt the feedback was perfect. Eventually, Reasyn was able to deliver accurate, clear, and actionable insights that I know users will love.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm really proud of encorporating AI into debate -- we've all seen AI integrated into coding, finance, and medicine, but more niche applications like debate have yet to be done. I am also super happy ReasynAI is a product that has that wow factor when you demo it because in the past my projects have been less AI focused and lack that 'wow! this is amazing!' sort of reaction from others.

What we learned

The main takeaway from Reasyn is that integrating AI into a product might sound intimidating but if you work at it it's really not too bad -- I know a lot of people who don't think they can build an AI app, including myself a few weeks back, but from this process I learned that anybody can use the power of AI to solve the problems they experience in their everyday lives.

What's next for ReasynAI

I've already reached out to several local debate academies asking if they would be interested in a Reasyn subscription so their students can use the platform with no usage limits. I've gotten a response from one of the academies and am doing a demo with them soon. Hopefully, this can pave the way for even more academies to come on board.
