Inspiration

I came up with this project's idea when I was calling someone on my phone and found it difficult to understand what the person on the other side was talking since English was my second language.

What it does

This app translates the audio input into the language the user had selected at real-time and also keep the notes for it. There are nine different languages you could choose to translate.

How we built it

First, I designed the UI using Canva. I showed the design I made to ChatGPT, and it improved the initial design into a more user-friendly and enticing UI. The coding part was done both by me and ChatGPT. ChatGPT gave me ideas on how I should deal with the code for each of the features, and I wrote them. We also collaborated in debugging the code. While ChatGPT proposed some of the likely causes of the bugs, I ran some tests in the code and addressed them.

Challenges we ran into

I initially tried to integrate the translate feature of Google Translate via API, but after finding out that it had a limitation on how much word the app could translate, I struggled in providing the user a limitless high-quality translation. I solved this issue by finding another complimentary translation website that has a similar feature, and integrating that in.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am very proud that I was able to make this huge project in this extremely short amount of time period, and I feel grateful that things I had learned outside of the school such as in my Robotics team actually meant a lot in this whole process of making my independent project. Especially, keeping the lessons such as "always read the error message" and "Don't hesitate to 'git push'" in my mind had contributed to this project.

What we learned

During the course of designing this app, I learned that bugs are sometimes so basic that we often overlook them, making us struggle for a long time. Therefore, it's always important to take a deep breath and them review the code from various aspects such as the syntax, misspelled words, and proper formatting.

What's next for Realtime Audio Translator & Notetaker--- "Global Assistant"

Right now the app does not work for someone else's computer since the internal translation feature is working only on my localhost. Therefore, my next plan for this is to make it work for any computer or devices. In addition to that, I plan to add another feature called "export notes" which allows the notes from the translation history to be exported as some type of file which makes this app more useful as a "Global Assistant."
