Inspiration
Our team finds that when searching online for opinions and advice on technical and non-technical questions, we often turn to Reddit. This website streamlines that process, enabling us to find the answers we're seeking in significantly less time—capable of parsing through and summarizing up to 10 pages within seconds.
What it does
Real Search sifts through the most relevant Reddit posts based on your query, extracts the information, and delivers a concise summary. P.S also allows you to gamble for some random advice
How we built it
Using the Google API, Real Search searches Reddit for the keywords entered in the search bar. It then utilizes the Reddit API to sort through relevant posts, summarizing the content into a tidy paragraph with the help of OpenAI. Comments and user details from the posts are fed into the OpenAI API, which then neatly compiles all the information into a brief paragraph, complete with links to each mentioned user. The search range is flexible, accommodating 1 to 10 Reddit posts to enhance the authenticity and reliability of the information provided. The backend is powered by Flask, with Tailwind CSS and HTMX enhancing the frontend.
Challenges we ran into
Crafting a web application that could deliver consistent, parseable results from ChatGPT was a notable challenge, particularly when it came to integrating user comment links relevant to the content. Hosting the web application was another hurdle, given the project's scale and computational demands. We ultimately chose pythonanywhere.com for its compatibility with our Flask backend.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We take pride in our search engine's ability to present a multitude of perspectives in a single output, all while maintaining references to the original information sources, ensuring each user is quoted with a link for further context.
What we learned
Diving into new frameworks and APIs was a thrilling journey. We found excitement in navigating through API documentation and resolving the errors that sprang up as we integrated API code.
What's next for Real Search
Exciting developments are on the horizon—but not until 12.
