RealmForge: A Community Kingdom

Inspiration

Reddit has always been about communities, discussions, and collective decision-making. We asked ourselves a simple question:

What if an entire Reddit community shared one kingdom instead of everyone playing separate games?

That idea became RealmForge.

Instead of building another strategy game with isolated players, we designed a living world where every vote, every contribution, and every daily decision permanently shapes the kingdom's future. We wanted players to feel like they were writing history together, giving them a compelling reason to return every day.

What it does

RealmForge is a multiplayer community-driven kingdom-building strategy game built specifically for Reddit using Devvit.

Every 24 hours, the entire community faces a new global event—such as a dragon attack, a mysterious plague, an ancient portal opening, or a political crisis.

Players vote together on how the kingdom should respond, and the winning choice permanently changes the shared world.

Players can also:

  • Build and upgrade kingdom structures
  • Gather and trade resources
  • Complete daily and weekly quests
  • Level up their character
  • Join guilds
  • Fight weekly community bosses
  • Unlock new regions and technologies
  • Climb leaderboards
  • Contribute their own stories, quests, monsters, and events for community voting

Every subreddit develops its own unique kingdom based on the decisions made by its members.

How we built it

RealmForge was built with a modern, scalable web architecture.

Frontend

  • Next.js
  • React
  • TypeScript
  • Phaser 3
  • Tailwind CSS
  • Framer Motion

Backend

  • TypeScript

We also integrated AI exclusively for procedural content generation—including daily kingdom events, NPC dialogue, quests, lore, and random encounters—while ensuring that all gameplay decisions remain entirely in the hands of the community.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was designing a game where thousands of players influence the same persistent kingdom without making individual contributions feel insignificant.

Balancing community voting with personal progression required careful game design to ensure both systems remained rewarding.

Another challenge was building a responsive experience that performs smoothly on both desktop and mobile while synchronizing daily events, global kingdom data, leaderboards, and player progression across the entire community.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're especially proud that RealmForge feels like a game built for Reddit, rather than simply being a game running on Reddit.

Some highlights include:

  • A persistent community kingdom that evolves through real player decisions.
  • Meaningful daily gameplay focused on collaboration instead of repetitive grinding.
  • A scalable architecture using Next.js, React, TypeScript, Phaser 3, and Devvit.
  • Dynamic AI-generated stories, events, and NPC dialogue.
  • Beautiful, responsive UI with smooth animations.
  • A system that encourages long-term community participation and retention.

What we learned

Building RealmForge taught us that social interaction can become the core gameplay mechanic instead of just an additional feature.

We learned how to design systems that reward collaboration, build long-term engagement through meaningful daily decisions, and create scalable game architecture using Devvit and modern web technologies.

Most importantly, we discovered how Reddit's voting and discussion culture can become the foundation of a unique multiplayer gaming experience.

What's next for RealmForge: A Community Kingdom

RealmForge is designed as a living world that can continue growing with its community.

Our future roadmap includes:

  • Seasonal kingdom storylines
  • Cross-subreddit alliances and rivalries
  • Guild wars and territory control
  • More world bosses and community events
  • Expanded crafting and trading systems
  • Cosmetic customization
  • Historical kingdom timeline
  • Community-created expansions
  • More achievements, collectibles, and hidden content

Our long-term vision is to make RealmForge the ultimate collaborative strategy game on Reddit—a world where every vote, every player, and every community leaves a permanent mark on history.
