Inspiration

There are so many landmarks in the world that the average person would miss seeing the vast majority of them in their lifetime. Landmarks are monumental and deserve to be recognized; one click at a time.

What it does

Realm Warp serves to highlight landmarks around the world one click at a time. Upon a "turn page" prompt a random landmark will be selected, highlighting pertinent information as well as displaying a picture of the landmark. A link will also be provided if the user wishes to learn more about the landmark.

How we built it

Using webscraping to develop a database of landmarks and relevant information, a random number generator was used to randomly display a landmark to the user in a smooth and intuitive way.

Challenges we ran into

Webscraping was difficult and had to be learned for the first time. Furthermore, creating a modern UI with animations proved to be quite difficult with the limited initial skillset and novice coding skills possessed by the team.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Despite being on the newer side of web design, with the hackathon being the very first for the majority of the team, much was learned and applied to the final application. The UI came along cleanly and the functions ran properly despite complete unfamiliarity with the interface.

What we learned

A great amount of essential web development skills as well as API/web scraping was learned. Though the language started off as unfamiliar, it became something the team members understood throughout the course of the hackathon.

What's next for Realm Warp

A more streamlined interface, as well as implementing potential trip planners to the landmarks presented, with a user input of one's current location. Furthermore, a more effective use of web scraping with a better API would be used for optimizing runtime and adding a larger pool of landmarks to the database.
