Inspiration
Inspiration Communication is a fundamental human right, yet for the 70 million Deaf people worldwide, digital interfaces are often silent. We were inspired to build Unmute1 because the "old way" of using generic, robotic avatars isn't working. We wanted to build something that feels human, native, and real.
What it does Unmute1 is the world’s first fully open-source, real-time ASL (American Sign Language) interpreter built and governed by Deaf native signers.
Native Speed: Uses a customizable avatar that signs at native conversational speeds.
Privacy First: The engine runs locally on the user's device, ensuring that private conversations stay private.
Open Governance: The sign database is governed by the community to ensure linguistic accuracy and cultural nuance.
How we built it We applied a "Quantum Chip" engineering mindset to solve the latency problem in gesture recognition:
Edge-AI Engine: Developed with JavaScript and optimized for iOS/Android to ensure smooth, real-time signing without cloud lag.
Computer Vision: Built custom models to interpret high-velocity hand shapes and facial expressions—the core components of ASL syntax.
Architecture: Designed as a modular API so other developers can "unmute" their own applications with a single line of code.
Challenges we faced The biggest hurdle was mapping the 3D complexity of sign language into a 2D interface without losing meaning. We had to innovate past standard motion capture to create a lightweight, responsive avatar system that doesn't drain mobile battery life.
Accomplishments that we're proud of We’ve successfully created a functional, local-first interpreter that bridges the gap between the Deaf community and the hearing world without requiring a human translator in the room.
What we learned Accessibility isn't a feature; it’s the foundation. We learned that by building with the community from day one, we created a tool that isn't just "functional"—it's culturally authentic.
What's next for Real-sign - Unmute1 We are expanding the sign database to include international sign languages and integrating the Unmute1 API into major e-commerce and banking platforms to ensure global accessibility.
