Real or Rendered
Real or Rendered is a web game where users guess whether an image is real or AI-generated.
I got the idea when I noticed that some of my family and friends were struggling to tell what was real and what wasn’t on social media. It made me realize how easy it is to be fooled by AI-generated content.
I wanted to build something that raises awareness about how realistic fake content has become, while helping people sharpen their instincts in a fun and engaging way. The goal is to let users experience firsthand just how difficult it is to trust what they see.
The game was built entirely using a single prompt in Bolt. That one prompt generated the full structure, functionality, and all files. I only made small edits afterward to fix issues such as an image loading error, adding the required Bolt badge, uploading the image data, and updating the terms of use to include attribution for where I got the images
Working with just one prompt was a bit of a challenge. Before writing the final version, I tested a bunch of different prompts to see what would work. I took screenshots of the layouts and ideas I liked from each one and used those to help me write a final prompt that brought the best parts together.
Getting the image data right was another big challenge. I explored using image APIs, but most returned content like digital art, logos, or very unrealistic generations. In the end, I manually selected and uploaded over 200 images myself. That gave me full control over the mix from obvious fakes to nearly impossible to spot examples. This made the game both fun and genuinely useful for training your instincts at spotting AI.
The result is a simple but powerful experience. Real or Rendered lets people test their gut feeling and see just how hard it’s becoming to tell what’s real and what isn’t. That challenge is exactly what inspired me.
