Inspiration
As a first-time homebuyer navigating the U.S. real estate market, I was overwhelmed by disjointed tools—clunky search sites, basic mortgage calculators, and no way to track closing progress. I wanted to build something that streamlined every step, from finding a home to signing the papers, for anyone in the U.S. or Europe facing the same frustration.
What it does
Real Estate Companion unifies property search (with smart filters for price, school districts, amenities), mortgage calculation (monthly payments, interest breakdowns), tour scheduling (in-person/virtual), and closing support (inspection checklists, document management, progress tracking) into one sleek, user-friendly platform.
How we built it
We started with core UX/UI design aligned with modern Western design aesthetics, then built the frontend with React, HTML, and CSS. We used Chart.js for interactive financial visuals, implemented Intersection Observer for scroll animations, and structured mock property/data logic with JSON to ensure smooth, responsive performance across devices.
Challenges we ran into
Crafting accessible, performant animations that respected reduced-motion preferences was tricky—balancing visual appeal with inclusivity took iterative testing. We also struggled to refine the mortgage formula ($M = P × \frac{r(1+r)^n}{(1+r)^n - 1}$) for real-time, accurate calculations while keeping the UI intuitive.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created a fully responsive app that feels premium yet approachable—from the frosted-glass nav bar to the count-up stats and hover animations. Most importantly, it solves real pain points: the property comparison tool and closing progress tracker make complex decisions feel manageable for first-time buyers.
What we learned
We deepened our understanding of responsive design for cross-market (U.S./European) users, mastered scroll-triggered animation logic, and learned to prioritize accessibility without sacrificing design. We also gained insight into real estate financial logic and user-centric form validation.
What's next for this project
We plan to add regional market insights for European countries, integrate real-time local property data, and build out agent collaboration features (like direct messaging). We also want to expand the mortgage tool to include tax and insurance calculations for full financial planning.
