5.8 million dogs and cats entered U.S. shelters and rescues in 2025 (Shelter Animals Count: about 2.8 million dogs and 3 million cats). Most of that intake is strays, not owner surrenders. Published surrender reasons are housing, too many animals, behavior, and cost — not a single “expectations” statistic.
What does show up when dogs come back is a gap between what people expected and what daily care actually is. ReadyPup is practice for that gap. It lets you put in the real time and work of a pet parent — the daily schedule, the walks, and the consequences of missed care — before you adopt. It does not prevent surrender, certify anyone, or speak for a shelter.

Who it’s for

Each day plans walks, potty, training, play, and grooming from breed and age defaults. Weather and pavement can shorten a walk or swap to indoor enrichment. There is no universal “safe walk temperature.”
Walks use motion and location. A long distance with no steps is meant to be rejected, and that rule is not yet strict enough to claim in public, so this draft does not. Missed care is visible: meters dip and fallout adds up. The report is not a shelter certificate.
After 28 counted days (Prep and Adding another), you get an honest readiness report. It is not a shelter certificate and will not bump any waitlist.
Works fully offline. Optional sign-in backs up care history, shares care with the household, and restores progress across devices.
