Inspiration
As a lifelong DIY enthusiast, I grew frustrated with scattered, low-quality tutorials lacking clear material lists or safety guidance. Watching friends waste time/money on ill-prepared projects sparked the idea: a centralized hub that combines curated content, practical tools, and community support for DIYers of all skill levels.
What it does
DITutorial Hub aggregates vetted DIY tutorials across 12 categories, letting users filter by difficulty, cost, and tools owned. It generates material lists, tracks project progress, enables community Q&A, and showcases completed projects – all while earning revenue through transparent affiliate links.
How we built it
We started with core user stories (search, filter, progress tracking) and built a React frontend with Node.js backend. We integrated PostgreSQL for user/data storage, AWS for hosting, and retailer APIs for price comparison. We added OAuth for secure login and built custom algorithms for personalized recommendations.
Challenges we ran into
Syncing offline tutorial access with cloud progress was tricky – we solved it with local storage + background sync. Retailer API rate limits disrupted price data, so we implemented cached fallback data. Ensuring tutorial quality required building a scalable expert review workflow.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Launching with 10k+ curated tutorials, achieving sub-2-second search load times, and building a tool inventory system that personalizes project suggestions. The community Q&A saw 500+ expert-verified answers in the first month.
What we learned
We mastered balancing user experience with business needs (affiliate links). We learned to prioritize accessibility (WCAG 2.1 AA compliance) and the importance of automated moderation for community health. API reliability planning is critical for real-time features.
What's next for this project
We’ll add advanced tool recommendation algorithms, expand retailer partnerships, and test a beta for localized material sourcing. We’re also exploring offline video support and a lightweight mobile web app (before native apps) to reach more on-the-go DIYers.
