Inspiration
Many of our ideas involved some kind of representation of an environmental issue (pet care of endangered species, Chameleon changing colors as a result of the environment). We also took inspiration from the format of taking care of an object like in MyTalkingTom and Tamagotchi. The idea of the object being cared for changing as a result of choices is the main inspiration that we got from the games. We also added heart and money counters that were inspired by the life and wealth meters within many games, like Duolingo.
What it does
Our app allows players to take care of a growing tree as they face challenges related to the environment. Throughout these different trials, players have to confront where their priorities lie in terms of our environment and their personal interests!
How we built it
We used Procreate to create the art and different elements of the game. Through android studios, we created xml files for the art and used java to implement the xml files.
Challenges we ran into
In our planning stage we ran into the problem of figuring out what stages of tree we should have and what stage of tree to start the trial. This led to a different question of the amount of hearts and money given at the start of the trial stages. Making sure the layouts changed correctly through java code was a big challenge in terms of the coding and design of the game. Understanding and knowing all the paths, along with keeping track of the number of hearts and amount of money, was a big part and struggle of the original planning and the planning of the code.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
First and foremost, we are proud of completing this project within the given period frame. Additionally, we all managed to learn a lot from each other and from having to do this project so we are proud of the new skills we acquired.
What we learned
We learned how to work in a group and got a peek into what it's like to work in a team oriented environment. Additionally, we got to learn about mobile app development and how to use digital graphics design platforms. Most importantly, we got to test our Java knowledge by applying it to solve a real life problem.
What's next for Ready To Grow!
With more development, we can increase the number of our trials and possible outcomes, and improve our graphics. If we expand our game further, we can shed more light on several other aspects of environmental conditions and how our actions make an impact.
