Inspiration

Pandemic Covid19 has highlighted the adversities faced by disadvantaged groups and disproportionally affect them in multiple ways. Coming from a tech and STEM background with strong belief in education as a driver of change, we would like to contribute our expertise and ideas to alleviate sufferings of the disadvantage and improve their future prospects one way or another.

What it does

We designed a progressive web app which acts as a personalised library to complement the literacy and education effort of the African Library Project. This app is built in with an integrated and centralised book cataloguing system from existing libraries fo the African Library Project

How we built it

We built a UI design using Figma and present our final products in Prezi

Challenges we ran into

The major challenge is the limited technological infrastructure that is currently available in these Afrophone countries which is further exacerbated by the current pandemic. Another big hurdle is our lack of personal and practical experiences to the background and culture of Afrophone countries. As we progress along the project, we realise that having a humanity and social science background, which the team lacks of, would be a huge advantage to better customise our features to learning pattern of Afrophone people.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

ReadUp is our pride and joy. It's simple, elegant and promising forward-thinking product. We believe this idea hold lots of potentials to establish a foundation to tackle the current lack of library management as well as literacy improvement in Afrophone countries.

What's next for ReadUp

We are excited to have the beta version of ReadUp to be developed and implemented. As we are still very new to the software development process as well as the Afrophone situation, some initial data could guide us toward greater improvements for the app that better cater to the unique learning environment in these countries. Hopefully, in the near future, our collected users and book loan database generated from ReadUp could facilitate customised library and teaching in a region-relevant and age-dependent manner.
