Inspiration

This project was inspired by my groups love of reading. We wanted to create a application that could be useful to other readers like ourselves. Additionally, our group created an application to tackle procrastination. Often, there are many tasks to complete but time management becomes a problem..

What it does

Our application requires the user to input the book title, their words per minute speed, and the date they want to complete the novel by. It shows them how long it will take to read the specified book. The application will calculate how much the user should read in one day or week to accomplish this goal. This way users can be more productive and manage their time better.

How I built it

The Reading Manager was built with the use of visual studio code to live share and work together, along with GitHub to save our work. To code the application we used html, JavaScript, and CSS.

Challenges I ran into

Along the way the biggest challenge we ran into was trying to figure out a way for the site to become interactive. Initially, we had trouble getting the submit buttons on our program to output the intended message. However, with help from the mentors we were able to overcome this challenge by utilizing an alert box in our program.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Hack Violet has been a amazing experience and was my groups first hackathon .Being first time hackers, we're proud of the fact that we were able to be consistent with our project and not give up even when things got challenging. We loved how we were able to incorporate the two things we are passionate about , reading and coding into our project. Overall, we're proud of the outcome of our project and what we accomplished with it.

What I learned

Creating this project enhanced my groups proficiency in the coding languages html, CSS, and JavaScript. Prior to the hackathon we were unsure of how to use these coding languages to build a simple web application. However, this project gave us a better understanding, and even taught us how to better utilize code editors such as visual studio code and GitHub.

What's next for Reading Manager

The next step for Reading Manager will be to enhance it's book searching function by including a web scraping feature. This will allow for the application to calculate how much the user should read for a larger variety of books. We hope to add more features in the future as we learn and improve our coding skills.
