I love reading books, so I knew I wanted to create a project that helps the reading community. When I delved deeper into reading, I found out there's a gender disparity in this area. I wanted to help solve this disparity and do my part, whether it be big or small.
There is currently a gender gap in reading/writing books. Many people, especially men and boys, don't read books by women or with female protagonists. This instills harmful gender stereotypes from an early age and is detrimental to society. One cause of this is that books are generally marketed with stereotypes in mind. Superheroes and horror are directed toward males and princesses and romance are directed toward females. Instead of focusing on gender, books should be targeted based on interests/hobbies. That's what this program aims to do. It recommends books written by women or with female protagonists to the user based on what they like to read/do. Its the first step in closing the gender gap in reading and together, we can solve this prominent issue!
At first, I started as a text-based project. Then, I decided to convert it to a GUI since that would make it look nicer and make it easier to use. This was very difficult since I had never made a GUI with Python before, so I had to watch tutorials in the span of these two days. This was a great learning experience for me, though, since I learned how to work under pressure as well as gained an entirely new set of skills.
