Inspiration

Annika's inability to focus while using her iPad during class. As technology increasingly affects peoples ability to focus, finding motivation to learn, read, or pay attention can be hard. We all thrive off of incentives, and having an end goal in mind.

What it does

Our website asks the child what they're reading, and how many paragraphs they intend to read. The child will then confirm they read the paragraphs, and be asked 3 multiple choice questions. They will be randomized and dependent on the paragraphs they read. Once they answer the questions they will move onto the fun, underwater game. After 5 minutes of fun, the child will go back to reading!

How we built it

Everybody used HTML and Javascript to code, but used CSS to style it.

Challenges we ran into

Initially, we struggled with coming up with an idea that we felt was original and doable in the time limit too. In terms of technical challenges, we had lots of difficulties with merging. We struggled with the time constraint, as towards the end we ran into technical problems.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

That we have an innovative idea, that resonates with our values as both students and MJL scholars. We each had moments that made us proud of individuals, but overall, we are proud of our team bonding, ability to work and learn in a crunch, and communication skills.

What we learned

We learned how to assess problems, integrate new techniques and opensource into our code, and be better coders. During the 24 hours, we learnt how to link Javascript, CSS and HTML, as well as how they worked, and how to collaborate more efficiently. On top of that, we learned a lot about each other.

What's next for Reading is fun!

Our main goal for Reading is fun! would be adding a version, where if the student gets the question wrong, they can try it again. In the future, we hope to see a version of our project that has adaptable questions, that can generate based off the students success rate. We also hope to see more books being added to the data base, more game options, and be able to recommend books to children based off their reading levels and interest.
