Inspiration
It started with just a pen and paper. I lost it a while ago but I still remembered my thought process. I wanted to find a cause that I could help promote an issue. I wanted to create a website that could be used on mobile devices. I learned that people could generate money through cost per click and I thought that it was cool that just by being on a website, you could raise money. My next step was to figure out what my application was going to be. I brainstormed some ideas since the theme was education, social good, and health. I immediately was reminded of my summer job. I worked at a daycare, and my job was to take care of 2-year-olds. Observing some of them I realized how lucky they were to know how to read. My issue became to help provide the resources for better education for youth. Too many people become illiterate or never reach the level of reading they should be at when they are older because they didn’t have the resources for an education that surrounds books.
What it does
Exploring the home page, you can view the mission statement and an organization that donates to world literacy. There is a section where you can select different subjects in STEAM: Science and Technology, English and reading, art, and math. Each section guides you into its own world and offers interactive lessons and games that you can play. The financial part of this website is the contracted advertisements that can be found all around the website that doesn’t hinder the aesthetic and interactions of my web. Lessons also include 1 to 2 advertisements depending on the length of the video.
How we built it
I used a mockup app on my iPad to sketch the designs of each page. After I finish the framework, logo, title, and contents of my website, I use HTML, CSS, and javascript to build my website. It has been a while since I have used HTML so I struggled in getting the hang of it as time runs up.
Challenges we ran into
No matter how long I stayed up, I couldn’t finish the website. I ran into so many problems and I had so many questions. I took something on when I wasn’t ready and it was too late to start from scratch and learn the basics. I also found it hard to create logos that were free and didn’t you to start a free trial.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I was PROUD that I was able to start my website. My idea has been sitting dormant, waiting to be forgotten. This hackathon has kickstarted my brain to start the whole development process, which is one of the things that I love in web/app development. I am proud of my incomplete website because it only means that it will be complete someday.
What we learned
I have learned what it is like to experience a hackathon, a hackathon online, and something that brings people together to help solve a cause. Although I worked by myself this time, I want to do more in creating that perfect team to bring ideas to life.
What's next for myWeb: saving the world
Development is definitely key in the future. More planning and design of different pages within my website. I actually was to create contracts with businesses to generate their ads on my website so that money can go to a foundation that I find really important, the World Literacy Foundation.
